The Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa) NPC (the Association) was formed in 1979 in recognition of a need for Arbitration Training among arbitrators who, although specialists in their respective fields of expertise, lacked the relevant law-based knowledge. We are the leading Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) institution resolving disputes through arbitration, adjudication and mediation, with a highly-qualified panel of retired judges, advocates, lawyers and subject matter experts.
The Association was therefore established to:
- Promote the use of the procedure of arbitration as a means of determining disputes;
- Provide a body of competent and experienced arbitrators and ADR specialists for appointment as required;
- Assist arbitrators and ADR specialists in the efficient discharge of their duties; and
- Make arbitration and ADR more effective.
We have the expertise to mediate, adjudicate and arbitrate in matters related to the following industries/areas:
- Construction industry;
- Sectional title;
Members who have relevant qualifications are appointed to specialist panels in the above fields.
The Association is a Recognised Course Provider (RCP) for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in London and, as such, our Arbitration Certificate Course and Fellowship Admission Course are internationally accredited. Our Mediation Training is also internationally accredited. Regular lectures and events are held at our branches in Cape town, Durban and Johannesburg, with well-known presenters, such as Prof David Butler, Alastair Hay, Adv Tjaart van der Walt and Chris Binnington, increasing the knowledge and expertise of our members and the public.
We are the preferred nominating body listed in various standard contracts. The Association’s Head Office, being ideally situated, has affordable and well-equipped venue hire in Sandown (Sandton) available for meetings, hearings and training.
