This Profile is in respect of Kap-You (Kevin) Kim. Kevin is head and founder of Bae, Kim & Lee’s International Arbitration & Litigation Practice Group. The Editor of Newton Arbitration/Matterhorn Law recently had the opportunity to interview Kevin in Seoul (see interview on this same platform). Kevin is as impressive in person as he is on paper. Few litigators in Asia are able to match his depth of experience.

Kevin has acted as counsel or arbitrator in numerous international arbitrations under various rules including ICSID, ICC, LCIA, AAA (ICDR), SIAC, HKIAC, LMAA, JCAA, UNCITRAL and KCAB. He served as lead counsel in a case that was awarded “Arbitration Win of the Year 2010” by the Global Arbitration Review. Kevin is serving as lead counsel for the Korean government in an ICSID case where Loan Star Funds pursued a USD 5 billion claim against the Korean government.

Kevin is a Vice President of the ICC Court and was appointed as the first LCIA Court Member from Korea in 2007 and served in the position for five years. He is now the Governing Board Member and Chair of the Audit Committee of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), President of the ICC Korea Arbitration Committee and President of the Korea International Trade Law Association.

Chambers Asia reports that Kevin is “one of the most respected figures in the Asian arbitration space” and “the best Korean lawyer in the field of arbitration in Asia.” He is recognized by Chambers as a “Star Individual” in dispute resolution (2010-2015) and has also been repeatedly recognized in Who’s Who Legal (2006-2015) and Asia-Pacific Legal 500 (2005-2015).

Kevin received his LL.M from Harvard Law School in 1994. He attended the Judicial Research and Training Institute, Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea from 1986 to 1988. He received a LL.M. in 1988 and a LL.B. in 1984, each from the Seoul National University Law School.

Kevin is admitted to practice law in the Republic of Korea and in New York.
